FAQ FOR CUBA TRAVEL

Where do I exchange money?

There is a money exchange. At the airport or port before passing through customs.

However, it is faster if you go to a hotel or the bank. Check with your guide or driver. They can help you achieve this quickly and easily. Cuban pesos (CUP) value is changing daily so check with your guide for the best rate but it should be the same in the airport as it is in the bank and hotel.

Some local businesses (Paladar, taxi, Casa Particular) will accept American Dollars and Euro’s (this is new as of January 2021. )

At the bank (you will need your passport) and only clean and crisp bills will be accepted. At this time (January 2022) US dollars are not accepted. Consider taking Euro’s or Canadian Dollars.

All payments are in cash on the island so plan accordingly. (No US bank currently does business in Cuba so do not expect to get money from and ATM.)

How much money should I exchange?

Enough cash to cover the cost of your tour, tips, souvenirs and food. Plan $10-30 per person for lunch and afternoon beverage. Credit cards are not accepted from US banks at this time. If you run out of peso’s some places will accept dollars and Euro’s but you may get your change back in peso’s. Remember there will be a chance to exchange your money back at the pier or airport before leaving.

Are there spending limits?

There is a limit of $5000.00 (equivalent) that you can bring into the country. Notice: Cruise lines may limit purchase amounts. Check with them before making purchases in Cuba. You may not bring back to the US Rum and cigar at this time. (May 2021) There is not a limit on purchasing, CD’s, books or souvenirs. Wooden statues or plaques need to be placed in checked luggage.

Is the water and food safe to eat and drink in Cuba?

Yes, the food is safe to eat but drink bottled water.

Is Cuba safe?

It is safe but practice the same safe habits you would when travelling anywhere. Don’t wear flashy jewelry, keep passport and extra money safe. Pick pocketing does occur.  When touring on a bus or by taxi, the drivers are usually good to keep an eye on things or lock the vehicle but it is always best to leave valuables at home.

Will my phone work in Cuba?

Check with your carrier before leaving home. Rates are still very high and rather than get stuck with a big unexpected phone bill when you get home, place your phone on airplane mode. You can still use it to take pictures.

Is Internet available in Cuba?

Yes, you can purchase a WiFi card (it has a code on it that you enter) from the Etecsa shop (their version of a phone shop...expect to stand in line). Cards are also available from the hotel front desk. The cost of the card ($1-5) for an hour of service. WiFi spots are in most parks and hotel lobbies and some Casa particulars. Connection is often very slow.

Recommended to bring with you on the Cuban tours:

Bottle of water, sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, and lightweight rain jacket. And of course, local currency to purchase food and souvenirs.
